Mayberry Minutemen

Well... Andy was a widower... and I'm sure he got a little lonely at times... I remember that episode where he started seeing the new town nurse, Peggy, and Opie got jealous and tried to break them up so he would start spending time with him again... Andy explained to Opie that sometimes a man needs companionship from a woman, to be able to talk about certain things, or go certain places like to a dance ("You can't see me takin' Barney to a dance, can you? I can't take Barney to a dance... he's too short.")

I don't think Andy was a womanizer, though I did notice he seemed to have a love interest from time to time, such as Ellie Walker throughout the first season, though any episode with her really tended to annoy me, because they were always the same: Andy makes a joke about something, she takes it personally and blows it out of proportion, Andy doesn't understand why she's upset, everybody else tries to coax them back together, Andy finally realizes where he went wrong and makes it right, alls well that ends well. Looking back, though, I think it was kind of ahead of it's time (feminism really wasn't relevent till the 70s). Then, as I said, there was the new town nurse Peggy, though I remember he once felt he wasn't good enough for her because she turned out to be rather wealthy and uppercrust. Then, of course, there was Helen Crump, who I recently learned was intended to only be a one-shot character whom the writers couldn't think of a name for, which is why they just randomly gave her an awful-sounding name.
