Three Wishes for Opie
« on: January 31, 2014, 07:38:10 pm »
Maybe it's just me, but I find it a little odd that "Three Wishes for Opie" is considered to be the greatest episode of TAGS of all-time. It's a really funny episode, but kind of random... Barney certainly steals the show throughout (in addition to Floyd and Goober going along with Barney in his summoning Count Iz Van Teleky), it just seems like an unusual choice to represent this show as the best of its best... considering how much heart this show has, I figure one of its more poignant episodes, like say "Opie the Birdman" or "Mr. McBeevee" would be considered the best.

Again, it could be just me.

I don't really consider it the best, either.I'd have to say that it was funny and such...but just not the absolute best. However,Barney is once again priceless in this episode...such a shame that Don Knotts left before the switch to color.

The whole show, in general, just wasn't the same after the switch to color... I don't know, as much as color really enhanced almost every show by the mid-60s, somehow, TAGS just didn't seem to work in color, made it feel like a totally different show. Not to mention trying to fill the void left by Barney by populating Mayberry with new residents didn't seem to work very well (though Don Knotts' annual guest appearances were fun ones). Plus, you could kind of tell that Andy himself really didn't have his heart in the show much anymore by that point.

Some shows really dazzled with the switch to color: BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, to name a couple... this show just didn't.

Yeah...but that one color episode with Barney when he comes back for a class reunion?Y'know,"The Return of Barney Fife?" That was the only one I hated from when Don returned in color.I hated it mainly because Thelma Lou just left Barney in the dust for some foreman on a wrecking crew....plus,there were some factual errors, such as the banner reading "Class of '48" instead of '45 like the last class reunion episode.
