The whole show, in general, just wasn't the same after the switch to color... I don't know, as much as color really enhanced almost every show by the mid-60s, somehow, TAGS just didn't seem to work in color, made it feel like a totally different show. Not to mention trying to fill the void left by Barney by populating Mayberry with new residents didn't seem to work very well (though Don Knotts' annual guest appearances were fun ones). Plus, you could kind of tell that Andy himself really didn't have his heart in the show much anymore by that point.
Some shows really dazzled with the switch to color: BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, to name a couple... this show just didn't.
