Andy,the Grouch

(1/1)

Barney Fife:
I have read that Andy Griffith was an uncaring grouch and did not care how he was portrayed on TV or movies. This is kind of visible in the color seasons, from the very first color episode on.Apparently he was an alcoholic by this point in his life and was prone to fits of rage on set.Watch his movie "A Face in the Crowd"(1957) for proof.

Gomer Says Hey:
Well, from what I understand, Andy seemed to have a lot of personal struggles in real life throughout his career: he failed as a comedian, and he failed as a movie actor, and I believe his show was basically his last ditch effort to make something of himself in the entertainment industry... I hear he once lost his cool about something, punched a wall, and broke his hand, so on the show, they said he got injured apprehending a criminal.

Barney Fife:
Oh yeah....plus,his marriage to Barbara Edwards had a major strain put on it because they were both actors, and Barbara was supposedly the "star" of the marriage before Andy's career really took off,and apparently she found it a little hard to take when Andy suddenly rose to stardom and she became more of a nobody. They divorced in 1971.Not sure if this really fits into the topic, but I read just last night that Andy's only son,Sam Griffith, died of alcoholism in 1996,and wonder if he got started on Andy's liquor.
