Hey, I actually posted this open letter to TV Land on their Facebook page two months ago; most of the people who read it liked it and agreed with my sentiments (not only that, but as I was digging this up again, I see that since then, literally every single post on TV Land's Facebook page is essentially the same thing):

Quote
Alright TV Land, let's have it out, once and for all. This is an open message to you.

You have completely alienated your audience for five years now by cranking out these crappy original sitcoms of yours that nobody likes, year after year, but you've finally sunk to your all time lowest point in the history of your existence. First of all, as I said previously, NOBDOY (as in NOBODY) likes your freakin' original sitcoms, y'know why? Because you're supposed to be dedicated to the preservation of classic television! The only reason you keep cranking out these crappy sitcoms is because YOU like that, and you're treating TV Land like its your own personal entertainment system. Second of all, NOBODY like Kirstie Alley anymore! She's rude, pompous, arrogant, disrespectful, and trashy; all she's done with herself recently is gain weight, make a reality show about struggling to lose weight, gain weight again, make another reality show about struggling to lose weight again, in a vicious cycle.

You claim you want to reel in the younger crowd instead, but you know what? EVERYBODY keeps trying to reel in the younger crowd! Teenagers and young adults aren't the only ones who watch television you know - middle aged, baby boomers, and seniors watch television too, but there's hardly anything for them to watch any more because of all this crap and trash that keeps polluting the television landscape! And you know what else? I guarantee you there's people my generation (GenX, thank you) and even younger who PREFER the kinds of shows you USED to be all about: THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, GREEN ACRES, M*A*S*H, HOGAN'S HEROES, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, THE MUNSTERS, SANFORD AND SON, and so on and so forth... and do you know why THAT is? Because younger people are smarter than others give them credit for, they know GOOD TV when they see it; all of television doesn't HAVE to be sex, raunch, sex, vulgarity, and more sex. Older shows were actually well-written, didn't rely on photogenic or big-named celebrities (or in the case with your sitcoms, washed-up has-beens) to carry the show, and they were GENUINELY funny and entertaining without having to rely on foul language and raunchy humor to appeal to people.

Not only that... but F.R.I.E.N.D.S? THAT '70s SHOW? 30 FRICKEN ROCK? Really? This is your idea for adding more classics to your lineup? 30 ROCK JUST ended and is on like THREE other channels, WHY do you need to add something, that obviously is NOT a classic, to your lineup?! I'm telling you what, if you end up adding the likes of GLEE or THE BIG BANG THEORY, two of the WORST shows in modern television history, to your lineup, I'm going to blow my brains out.

I am honestly surprised that people even still have anything to do with TV Land anymore. There's better alternatives to you now: a lot of these old shows you used to care about are on DVD - uncut and in superior quality - and other channels have come along to pick up where you've left off, such as MeTV (and they actually pride themselves in NOT shrinking the credits at the end of the shows, WOW).

So, where does this leave us, TV Land? Are you going to continue to crank out your own original crap, and add MODERN shows to your channel? Well, that may make YOU happy, but expect an increase in the mass exodus of what was once your audience, as they turn to alternatives like MeTV and DVDs. Are you going to redeem yourselves? Start adding more TRUE classics to your channel again? Or perhaps fashion your own original sitcoms after these classic ones? Because I'll be honest TV Land, I myself am a producer (a struggling one at that), and as I said previously, I KNOW there's people my age and younger who prefer older television, and if I was able to, I'd make shows like the way they used to be made; but, I doubt all of this is going to happen.

In closing, you have certainly let us down, TV Land, very much so. You are pretty much only a shell now of what you used to be. Again, it seems to me that you're pretty much catering and tailor the channel to your own personal appeal now, so I guess this is what makes you happy (hey, I just had a thought... maybe TV Land is a Google entity?), but you've certainly made millions of people across America very unhappy.

You have a nice day now.

Alas, it's only a matter of time before even the lousy original programs turn into REALITY TV that consumes what remains of the lineup.

The downward spiral has already begun.  I've seen it unfold all too many times.  First was MTV, then The Learning Channel, Bravo, Discovery, even the History Channel...all devoted to music, education, or art at one time.  Now, they're almost 100% "reality" drivel.  I project TV Land will be in the same pathetic state within the next few years, scraping scum from the bottom of the barrel of human existence to appeal to the lowest common denominator.  Frankly, I gave up on broadcast/cable television years ago because of this.

When I want to watch something, I buy, stream or download it online.  I refuse to give networks my viewing time or cable companies my money when things are this bad.

Oh, hey, TV Land's had reality programs before too. They actually had one dedicated to classic TV, called, TV LAND MYTHS & LEGENDS, where they discussed urban legends that have surrounded classic TV and movies for years, such as did a munchkin really hang himself on the set of THE WIZARD OF OZ, whatever happened to Arnold Ziffel, who really killed Bob Crane... other than that, Farrah Fawcett, Joan Rivers, George Foreman, Mr. T,  and Lisa Rinna have all had their own reality shows on TV Land... they've also had a number that had absolutely nothing to do with classic TV whatsoever, like one they called HIGH SCHOOL REUNION which was basically BIG BROTHER for middle aged people reuniting with their old high school classmates... then the freakiest of all... Ashton Kutcher (yes, that Ashton Kutcher) created and produced a reality show on TV Land called GENERATION GAP, which was basically teenagers and twentysomethings actually trying to sex-up their grandparents... I kid you not... I was creeped out at the previews of teenage girls taking their grandmothers to department stores to get them to try on provocative and age-inapproriate clothes!

So yeah, TV Land hasn't been immune to reality programming either. Hell, even The Weather Channel has its own reality shows that have nothing to do with weather!

Aside from Myths & Legends, it sounds like my prediction pretty much came true before I even made it...which, of course, completely disqualifies it as a prediction.

In brighter news, here's at a sunny forecast concerning Weather Channel's incomprehensible reality lineup: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/14/directv-drops-the-weather-channel/

I don't know what WeatherNation is, but I wonder if it's anything like WeatherScan, or the previous NBC WeatherPlus, which is basically just a continuous 24-hour loop of straight-to-the-point weather and forecast information. Admittedly, WeatherScan the first thing I turn on in the morning, and the last thing I have on at night, so as to prepare myself for the day's weather.

It's basically what the Weather Channel used to be.  The most disturbing thing about the Weather Channel becoming reality TV is that so many people depend on having that sort of 24-hour, constant source of weather forecasts and alerts.  It's going beyond just depriving folks of quality entertainment and venturing into the territory of hindering in an important service to the public.

Of course the Weather Channel is a private company and isn't legally bound to provide us with the weather, but still...

I know right? I mean when it comes to Weather Channel itself, you have to either wait for the Local on the 8s for the forecast information in your area, or, you have to keep an eye on that CNN-inspired crawler-type thing at the bottom of the screen to catch the forecast for your specific city.

I will say this about Weather Channel though... they know how to try and reel in viewers during the afternoon, have you seen those hot female reports in their tight, almost sleeveless dresses? :P

That, and I'm sure it's much easier for them to determine the exact temperature and wind chill factor when they have that much raw flesh exposed to the elements.

And here's another good one: TV Guide channel isn't a TV Guide channel anymore, it appears to be dumping grounds for reruns of soaps and stuff.

It really doesn't matter too awful much though, considering just about every cable and satellite provider pretty much has their own programming guide you can search through to see what's on, which pretty much defeats the need for a TV Guide channel.

I maintain we're experiencing a cultural dark age right now.

It seems like nearly every form of entertainment and art has gradually decreased in quality over the past 50-60 years.  There are a few exceptions here and there, but the general trend has been a downward spiral.  In fact, Stanford University recently conducted a rather large study showing that the regular indicators of good music such as variation of chords, unique harmony and diversity within single songs and among multiple songs - across nearly every genre - has steadily decreased over the past 50 years.

The most baffling thing is that so many new avenues of communication, common access to previously high-end media creation tools, etc. have opened people up to a nearly endless array of inspiration and possibilities.  You'd think it would have resulted in an explosion of creativity.  Instead, nearly everything nowadays is utter garbage.

On the upside, at least every dark age is usually followed by a renaissance.

IMOO, I think entertainment has certain seen a decline in quality in the last 10-20 years or so.

Music aside (yes, music's been pretty bad since the 90s), film and television has kind of teetered from the 90s till the mid-2000s or so, then it just dropped drastically. Many say SEINFELD was the last true great television series, and I kind of, only because even though I know a lot of shows since then have won a lot of critical praise, I personally dislike almost everything on TV today: THE OFFICE, MODERN FAMILY, GLEE, THE BIG BANG THEORY, etc... all of these shows are considered great TV, but I hate 'em. I find THE OFFICE to be extremely dull and boring, tremendous false advertising has confused the heck out of me about MODERN FAMILY (everybody makes it out to be a show about reverse-gendered polygomy, even though it isn't), the singing on GLEE is like fingernails on a blackboard (not to mention the creators swear the show is unique and different from other shows on TV, but it really isn't), and I hate how THE BIG BANG THEORY makes nerds seem like deranged sexually depraved weirdoes.

Another problem too is that Hollywood admittedly doesn't want to take a chance on anything new anymore. As far as TV goes, if one show turns out to be an unexpected hit, then all the networks have to copy it... I mean, how many mockumentary-style "sitcoms" do we have now because of THE OFFICE? And as far as movies go, this is exactly why the theaters are packed with remakes of past franchises that tarnish the originals because the movie industry is afraid of trying something new that may fail. Theaters are a joke today anyway... not only is it incredibly expensive to go see a movie in this day and age, but lately, the movie industry is slowly phasing out the theater experience altogether - they're trying to reserve theater space for this star-powered, big-budgeted, action movies, because apparently those are the ones they draw in the most money from theater goers.

Yep...

There was a moderate decline between the classic rock era of the 60s and the 80s-90s, but afterwards there was still a good deal of high-quality art, music, movies, etc. coming out.  In the 90s, it seems that nearly everything was better than it is today.  Even when I look back at things I panned as no-talent rubbish, it's all vastly superior to today's offerings.  Sometime slightly after 2000, the real crash started to happen.  Quality went down harder than the Twin Towers.

And remakes...wow, there's another serious outrage.  Remakes used to be relatively rare, and usually excellent (78's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 82's The Thing, 94's Dracula, etc.), but now it's as if movies are being remade just for the sake of remaking something that was previously successful in hopes that it'll work again.  Unfortunately, nearly 100% of the time, all of the elements that made the original great are missing.

The new Evil Dead remake, for instance, had absolutely none of the horror camp or grotesquely exaggerated features that made the originals timeless classics.  Plus, how can you have an Evil Dead movie without Bruce Campbell?  Next thing you know, they'll be trying to remake Conan and Total Recall without Arnold...oh wait, they already did.  -_-
